  • Old Vintage Antique 4/4 Maine violin labeled Forest Nevells 1929, for conservation or restoration, #1320
For sale is a full sized antique violin of historical interest, for conservation or restoration. This is an eccentric local violin with an unusual arched top (see pic) and doubly arched back, from Stonington, Maine, in 1929.
The violin is labeled “Built by Forest Nevells / Sonington, Me / March 1929.” It could also be 1939, as the lowest part of the last two numbers has worn off. The overall length of the violin is 23 1/2″. The two-piece back measures 14 1/4″ long, 7 5/8″ across at the lower bout, and 6 1/8″ across at the upper bout. It is doubly arched although not so prominently as the top. The one-piece top is medium-grained, probably made from local spruce, and prominently and somewhat precipitously arched (see pic). An inscribed line substitutes for purfling on the top and back. Blocked in all 4 corners and fully lined. No cracks on top, bottom, or ribs. No rib separations. Pegbox has repaired cracks on the bass side (see pics) but if restored to playing condition it should be cheeked. Original finish has alligatored and has a few prominent scratches (not cracks) on top (see pics). Nut may be of bone. No bridge or sound post. Inventory # 1320. No bow or case.
