+++About Karatsu ware+++
Karatsu ware is japanese pottery produced around Saga and Nagasaki Prefectures. It is a traditional craft made from around the 16 century, and various kinds such as tea pottery are made.
The feature of Karatsu ware is the simple but not coarse taste that makes you feel the earth. In the Azuchi-Momoyama period, it was called “1-Raku, 2-Hagi, 3-Karatsu” and appreciated as a representative vessel in the japanese tea ceremony. Raku ware of 1 and Hagi ware of 2 are made in Kyoto and Yamaguchi respectively, but both of them have a history of about 400 years and are newer than Karatsu ware.
In the tea ceremony, which values wabi and sabi, simple and profound styles are preferred, and there are many types of Karatsu ware besides tea pottery.
The works called “Ekaratsu” draw designs of flowers, birds, plants, etc., and Karatsu, and “Chosenkaratsu”its expression mixed with black iron glaze and white straw ash glaze is attractive. Other than that, there are various styles such as “Bankaratsu”.
